Two Way Pager Service

Two Way Pager Service

So we know that text messaging is hot right now. It seems like everyone has a cell phone that does it all or a Blackberry with every special feature known to man. Have these gadgets made two-way pager service a thing of the past? Let's talk about two-way pagers.

  • What is a pager? Pagers are small telecommunications devices that receive alert signals or short messages. A two-way pager allows you to send data as well as receive it. In some instances two-way pagers can act as an alternative to a cell phone. Paging Network even allows you to record a message and have an answering service on the pager. Some of the companies that offer two-way pager services are Apple Computer, Hewlett Packard, Motorola, Sharp, and Casio Computer.
  • How would you use a two way pager? If you are a network manager with a network-diagnostic program that could alert you to emergencies, you could reply that you were, or were not, able to deal with the problem at that particular time. If you responded that you were not able to come, the diagnostic program could page someone else. You could even respond with a message telling the diagnostic program which back-up server to engage. Normally messages need to stay below 500 characters because of bandwidth limitations.
  • What does a pager look like? Some pagers are small boxes that look like today's alphanumeric pagers. The new ones coming out will have small keyboards and larger displays. And some will be PC card devices to go into a laptop or handheld PC. In order to respond with a message, on some pagers you scroll over an alphabet until you get to the appropriate letters, selecting one letter at a time.
  • How long does a 2 way pager's battery last? Generally you can get 2 weeks worth of life out of a single AA battery.
  • Where can I find out more info about 2 way pagers? Sysavy.com has more in depth coverage on pagers including information about SkyTel's newest pagers.
