Okay, let's say you have decided to jump on the Internet phone service train and start using VoIP services; but, you want to keep your phone number. Guess what, you're in luck. Most reputable Internet phone companies let you keep your number. So you don't need a separate Internet phone number to get started using the latest greatest in telephone service. The first thing to do when signing up for a new service using the Internet for your phone calls is to select the option to keep your existing number. The company should then send you the steps to start the transfer process. They will let you know if you need to change your number simply by having you enter your area code and the first three digits of your number. Here's the exception. DSL customers have to keep their phone numbers in order to maintain their high-speed connection with Vonage. If you have DSL then you might need to transfer your DSL service to another phone line with your current carrier or switch to cable Internet. Transferring your phone number to your new service takes about 20 days (sometimes faster). During that time you'll be issued a temporary number so you can start using the new service immediately. You can stay updated as to the progress of your number by checking in at your web account. If for some reason you cannot transfer your number, you'll get to choose a new one. Or you can keep your number, choose a more minimal service, and add a new number that saves on outgoing calls. |
