Digital Phone Systems

Digital Phone Systems

Digital phone systems are telephone systems, like PBXs (Private Branch Exchanges), used by large corporations. These systems offer many benefits over analog telephones - the main benefit for corporations centering on the ability to give many users access to one telephone line.

Why should I be looking at a digital telephone system?

Digital technology translates voice and pictures into binary 0s and 1s, whereas analog phones take those same signals and translate them into electronic pulses. Because the digital system is simpler, more information can be packed in resulting in better clarity for telephone calls.

Digital telephones have other advantages over analog telephones such as:

  • Better security
  • Better service quality
  • Ability to support wireless Internet
  • More information per transmission than analog
  • Better sound quality
  • Stronger battery life

Digital phone systems also offer a high level of phone functionality. They have intercom capabilities, speakerphones, multiple line appearances, mute and hold buttons, LCD displays, receptionist monitoring, in-use indicators, system paging, redial, date/time display, and programmable feature buttons.

Where can I get a digital telephone system?

There are many companies online who would be happy to sell you a phone system. Comdial offers digital phone systems at Comdial.com. Their systems operate internally (KSU) and range from 4 lines with 8 phones to 16 lines with 32 phones. The smallest 4x8 systems start at $1,100. At TechListings.net (Techlistings.net), there are other phone companies listed with prices and comparisons between the telephone systems. TechListings points out that Avaya/Lucent, Norstar, NEC & Panasonic are the industry leaders for digital systems and that since phone systems tend to be quite durable, refurbished phones might be a good consideration.
